Transfer trucking

A transfer is a truck and a pull trailer working as one unit, and it moves more material per trip than anything else that stays street legal. On open sites and long hauls it is the cheapest way to move volume, because the trip count drops and the cycle does the work.

It is also the truck that most often cannot get in. Transfers need room to turn and a route that takes the length, which is exactly the conversation dispatch has with you before assigning one.

How we run it

Access first, always. Dispatch asks about gate width, turnaround, street grade and overhead clearance before a transfer is assigned — a transfer that cannot make the gate on day one costs more than the trips it would have saved.

Loads run at legal weight and are ticketed per load. On export work we pair the truck with the right receiving facility; on delivery work we sequence loads to the crew placing the material.

Where the site is tight but the volume is real, dispatch will say so and put Super 10s on it instead. Recommending the bigger truck onto a site that cannot take it is how a schedule breaks on the first morning.

When a peak week needs more transfers than we own, we coordinate vetted partner capacity — and tell you plainly which trucks are ours and which are partners.

Who orders this

Grading contractors moving volume off open pads. GCs on subdivision and pad work in the Tri-Valley. Paving crews taking bulk base rock. Excavation subs with a real export quantity and the access to justify the length.

Questions estimators ask

Transfer or Super 10 — how do I choose?
Access and cycle length. If your gate and streets take a transfer, its bigger payload usually wins on long hauls. If access is tight or loads are staged, the Super 10’s maneuverability wins. Describe the site and dispatch will make the call with you.
What access does a transfer actually need?
Room to turn the full length, a gate it can enter without a multi-point turn, and a route without a low clearance or a weight-restricted bridge. Tell dispatch the address and any known constraints and we will tell you before the truck is booked, not after.
Can transfers work a night paving shift?
Yes — bulk material to a paver at night is routine work. Give dispatch the traffic-control plan and the window so drivers arrive briefed on the closure rather than learning it at the gate.
